Bifurcations and Chaotic Solutions of Two-dimensional Zonal Jet Flow on a Rotating Sphere

چکیده
We study bifurcation structure of the zonal jet flow the streamfunction of which is expressed by a single spherical harmonics on a rotating sphere. In the non-rotating case, we find that a steady traveling wave solution arises from the zonal jet flow through Hopf bifurcation. As the Reynolds number increases, several traveling solutions arise only through the pitchfork bifurcations and at high Reynolds number the bifurcating solutions become Hopf unstable. In the rotating case, on the other hand, under the stabilizing effect of rotation, as the absolute value of rotation rate increases, the number of the bifurcating solutions arising from the zonal jet flow decreases monotonically. We also carry out time integration to study unsteady solutions at high Reynolds number and find that in the non-rotating case the unsteady solutions are chaotic, while not in the rotating cases calculated. This result reflects the general tendency that the rotation stabilizes nonlinear solutions of Navier-Stokes equations. Keywords—rotating sphere, two-dimensional flow, bifurcation structure

Stability and bifurcations of two-dimensional zonal jet flows on a rotating sphere
In planetary atmospheres in Jupiter or Saturn, for example, strong zonal jets have been observed. The existence of the zonal jet flow has been considered as one of the robust properties of planetary atmospheres. The two-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes flow on a rotating sphere is considered to be one of the simplest and most fundamental models of the atmospheric motions taking into acc...
متن کاملAsymptotic analysis of long-time behaviour of zonal flows in two-dimensional turbulence on a β plane
In forced two-dimensional turbulence on a rotating sphere, it is well known that a multiple zonal-band structure, i.e. a structure with alternating eastward and westward jets, emerges in the course of time development. The multiple zonal-band structure then experiences intermittent mergers and disappearances of zonal jets, and a structure with only a few large-scale zonal jets is realised as an...
متن کاملUniversal spectrum of two-dimensional turbulence on a rotating sphere and some basic features of atmospheric circulation on giant planets.
The Kolmogorov-Batchelor-Kraichnan (KBK) theory of two-dimensional turbulence is generalized for turbulence on the surface of a rotating sphere. The energy spectrum develops considerable anisotropy; a steep -5 slope emerges in the zonal direction, while in all others the classical KBK scaling prevails. This flow regime in robust steady state is reproduced in simulations with linear drag. The co...
متن کاملStatistics of an Unstable Barotropic Jet from a Cumulant Expansion
Low-order equal-time statistics of a barotropic flow on a rotating sphere are investigated. The flow is driven by linear relaxation toward an unstable zonal jet. For relatively short relaxation times, the flow is dominated by critical-layer waves. For sufficiently long relaxation times, the flow is turbulent. Statistics obtained from a second-order cumulant expansion are compared to those accum...
متن کاملExperimental study and numerical simulation of three dimensional two phase impinging jet flow using anisotropic turbulence model
Hydrodynamic of a turbulent impinging jet on a flat plate has been studied experimentally and numerically. Experiments were conducted for the Reynolds number range of 72000 to 102000 and a fixed jet-to-plate dimensionless distance of H/d=3.5. Based on the experimental setup, a multi-phase numerical model was simulated to predict flow properties of impinging jets using two turbulent models. Mesh...
